Founded in 1947 by Fr Werenfried van Straaten, `the Bacon Priest,` Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) is an international Catholic charity working to support the Church wherever it suffers from persecution, isolation or extreme poverty. In 2017 ACN undertook over 5,300 projects in more 149 countries around the world. Through information, prayer and action, ACN builds churches, trains seminarians, and provides financial support for priests, nuns and catechists. We also print and distribute catechetical materials including the Child`s Bible which is now available in 189 languages. ACN`s NW office works with parishes, schools and special interest groups throughout NW England and North Wales. Our staff consists of the NW Manager, a schools and events officer, an administrative assistant and five Area Secretaries who give ACN Appeals in parishes throughout the region. Please get in touch if you would like to schedule an ACN Appeal in your parish, book a speaker, host a prayer vigil or discuss other ACN events. The NW Office also distributes resources for schools, ACN literature and trading stock.

Directly under the Holy See, Aid to the Church in Need supports the faithful wherever they are persecuted, oppressed or in pastoral need. ACN is a Catholic charity - helping to bring Christ to the world through prayer, information and action. Founded in 1947 by Fr Werenfried van Straaten, whom Pope John Paul II named "An outstanding Apostle of Charity", the organisation is now at work in about 130 countries throughout the world. The charity - whose UK office is in Sutton, Surrey - undertakes thousands of projects every year including providing transport for clergy and lay Church workers, construction of church buildings, funding for priests and nuns and help to train seminarians. Since 1979, almost 50 million copies of Aid to the Church in Need Child`s Bibles have been printed in 172 languages and have been distributed worldwide.
